If you only had 40 years…

May 19, 2009 · 2 Comments

What if, from the moment you were born, you were only expected to live for 40 years?

I would only have 16 years and 2 months left to live if that were true. My mom would have been gone for 11 years, and my grandparents would be long gone.

That is reality for the people in Swaziland, according to Unicef’s most recent report from 2007 of the state of the country. There is basically no middle generation. It is grandparents raising babies, and when the grandparents pass away it becomes babies raising babies. In 2007 there were 56,ooo children living as orphans because of AIDS. Fifty six thousand. And the estimate for people of all ages living with HIV in 2007 was 190,000. Those are some huge, sad numbers.

It’s overwhelming.

You’re only one person. What can ONE person do for 56,000 children, or for the 190,000 living with HIV? And what can only ONE person do, from across the entire world?

I don’t have every answer. I probably don’t have anything more than suggestions for you, actually. But I know what I am going to do about it.

This July I am spending 2 weeks, with a team of eleven other young adults, in Swaziland, loving on all the kids we can. And giving the Gogos (grandmothers, the ladies who are caring for the kids) a little break.

I feel absolutely blessed to be able to do this, and even more so to be contributing to the Legacy Book project.

Sinethemba. I have hope. The name of a sweet baby boy that our team leader met. His mother, Dudu, was dying of AIDS when Morgan met her, and last we heard she was not doing very well. The Legacy Book project was inspired by Morgan’s encounters and relationship with Dudu, a woman who was heartbroken to be leaving her son. The vision for this project is to give the children who will be losing their parents something to hold on to. Memories, photographs of the parents and children together(a rarity in poor rural areas), family history, advice for their futures, things their parents loved about them. Invaluable gifts to a child whose memories will fade, whose heart will long to remember what his mom’s hugs felt like, what her dad’s voice sounded like, the songs their family has sung for years.

If we can help preserve those things, if we can help the parents leave behind a legacy for generations to come to enjoy, then we have done our part. A small part in showing those children that they are valuable, loved, worthy, and not overlooked; that their parents loved them, that their lives can be healthier and longer, that they too can make a difference in someone’s life. That they are special enough for a group of 12 twentysomething year-olds from California to fly across the world to hang out with them, play soccer, teach them anything we can, write down their stories, capture the special way their mothers smile when they look at their child, and freeze a moment in time where parent and child were enjoying the moments they had.

My focus is to be the photographer who captures these moments, to record a part of the life each family is living, and to give the children these photos to keep forever, even past the time when the picture of their mother’s face is still clear in their minds. I’m honored to be a part of this. I’m preparing to cry, a lot, but I’m honored to be able to use my gift to bless others.

Because one person can make a difference.

{If you would like to be a part of this project by helping me meet my fundraising needs, please follow the instructions in the box up on the sidebar titled “Swazi- July 09″. (My  goal is $1,000.00 by June 1st, and a total of $3,00.00 by the end of June, and we leave mid July) Thank you in advance for any donations made! Things like this are not possible without many people coming together and doing what they can to make it work. And if you would like to keep this trip in your prayers, that is also a fantastic contribution, thank you.}

Does this make me official?

April 2, 2009 · 1 Comment

This saturday is my first engagement shoot!

It’s for a friend of a friend. You know how that works. Word of mouth is everything in this “business” many times. I just need more mouths to get the words out.

Anyways, I’m super excited to get back into the swing of things. The ideas are just brewing in my head, bubbling over the sides. Hmm, maybe that’s not the best visual imagery to use for a brainstorm, but it kinda works.

I’ll be posting the images to my flickr after I edit them. Who knows, I may even post a teaser here?

ps…I have more thoughts gathering in my head about the Swazi trip, just waiting to organize them into a post…

First Swaziland Meeting

March 24, 2009 · Leave a Comment

We met for the first time this sunday morning. Ten of us, interested in going to Swaziland, Africa in July.
We shared our reasons for wanting to go.
It’s amazing to see such different people come together for a united purpose. I mean, I suppose we’re not all that different, but just gifted with different things.
I am beyond excited about what is to come with this group of people, desiring to love people across the world.
And to be able to use my photography to provide children with a tangible memory of their parent(s) who will not be around for their adult lives…that is amazing. I am so honored to be a part of this team.
I’ll share more as more develops.
I think this is the start of something amazing. For sure.

Back from accidental Hiatus!

March 17, 2009 · Leave a Comment

Oh, hello there!

I guess 5 months is  quite a while to be away….

And what a crazy 5 months it’s been, but I wont get into all of that.

How about a few new things to get beck into the swing of it?

-Yesterday at VONS, while grabbing lunch, I overheard this announcement: “Attention all VONS shoppers, there is a small white poodle loose in the store. If this is your dog, please go get it. Thank you!”

-5 seed almond bars from Trader Joes=delicious

-I’m planning on going to Swaziland, Africa this summer! And I’ll be photographing something very special…More details to come…

-I’m hopefully also shooting a wedding in July! A friend of a friend. Anyone else looking for a photographer?

-I got a new car! Praise God! It’s a long, wonderful story.. if you want to hear it, let me know. If anyone is even reading this anymore. hmmmm.

-I lost a dear friend in december. It’s been really tough. Please pray for her husband and 3 boys. Today would have been their anniversary.

-Getting paid to learn Photoshop was great! Next up: Lightroom! Anyone use LR? Tips?

Okay, kiddos. That’s all for now!

Hopefully I’ll be better about posting!?

Crisp air and a Chai? Yes please!

October 7, 2008 · Leave a Comment

It’s finally starting to feel like fall!  The air is growing crisp and the light is changing. Does anyone else notice that the daylight is different in different seasons? I love it. Maybe that’s the photographer in me…

The light turns into this glowing golden light, and it is so much softer than the harsh summer rays. Not to mention that it’s so much more pleasant to photograph in the fall, sweating makes it harder to focus… Oh dear, I mean mentally, not focus as in sharpness. The cheesy puns come even accidentally.

Now I want something warm and yummy from Starbucks. It might help me wake up too, which would be great since I’ve been at work for 2 hours! Wanna know a secret? Tall Chai with only 2 pumps of chai, add one pump of white mocha and 1 shot of espresso. DELICIOUS! go ahead, try it.

I think I know where I’m going on my lunch break…

Fresno was…

July 28, 2008 · Leave a Comment

Fresno is hot. And kind of far away. And my 2 star motel was a little ghetto.

But over all it was a good weekend. And totally worth it. I think it really did me some good to step outside my comfort zone, and to stick to a commitment that scared me (and ended up costing me a pretty penny when all was said and done!).

I got a nice refresher on things I already knew. I learned a few new things that I should have already known about my camera. How to adjust settings that I spent hours hearing about in various classes but it just never stuck.

I also learned how quickly tech stuff gets outdated! My baby is only like 5 years, but lacks so many features that newer Rebels have. Oh well. We’re doing just fine.

So anywho, if you are around Fresno and are looking for a photographer for a wedding/family portraits/senior portraits/etc you should check out Mariano Friginal. He was the photographer who led the Camp Shooty workshop. Super cool guy with loads of talent!

Hopefully this weekend will be a kick off point for me. It’s time to get serious and learn and practice and shoot and learn and practice and shoot and…you get the point.

Oh, and Fresno, it was hot! did I mention that already? poor me and my spoiledbyniceweather self…yikes. Thank goodness I took my mom’s AC equipped car instead of Shaboofa the sweat inducing black box!

Also, I got charged 99cents to use my debit card this weekend! Who does that!?! And what makes it extra lame is that I was buying something that was only $1.40, but didn’t have cash. Dang. Gotta watch out for those sneaky fees!

Fresnowhere…Fresomewhere…here I come!

July 23, 2008 · Leave a Comment

This weekend will put another 600+miles under my seatbelt.

Did you catch that joke? It was pretty clever. Don’t blame you if you missed it.

Anyways. I’m driving to Fresno for a workshop I’ll be attending on saturday. Yep. Fresno. Also known as “Fres-nowhere”. But on saturday it’ll be Fre-somewhere for me.

And I’m going all by my lonesome, which is kind of new for me. I usually drag a buddy along for super-fun mini roadtrips. Not this time though, I’m going it alone. It should be interesting. I hope it isn’t too “interesting” though. I seem to have special things happen whenever I’m in the car for too long. There’s a not-so-funny story that shall remain untold, and then there’s just silliness that usually occurs after one has been strapped to ugly upholstery for too long.

This purpose of the roadtrip, and the purpose of the workshop is to enlarge the “I’m a photographer” part of my brain. No surgery required, it’s an outpatient procedure. And it’s only a few hundred dollars. Yikes. It has ended up adding up to more than I would ever comfortably spend in one fell swoop. But, I’m thinking it’s gunna be just freakin’ awesome.

As I’ve mentioned before, it’s kind of a baby step towards what I want to “be when I grow up”, which is right about now. So, it’s a wee bit scary, for that fact alone. However, it’s great, I’m excited and nervous and tired just thinking about the drive.

I’ll break it up by staying in the L to the A with mi madre on thursday night, then heading up to Fresno on friday, to be there in the AM for the workshop.

Yay for hours on the road, an unknown hotel, and a group o’ strangers!

Wish me luck, por favor!

And, if you know of anywhere interesting to stop in between LA and Fresno, PLEASE let me know! I’m gunna get perdy bored all alone in a car for like 3 or 4 hours, and I know a pit stop will be necessary…

Flickr is go! {Paloma.Lisa} Photography

June 16, 2008 · Leave a Comment

I’ve been in Flickr land for a few hours. Uploading, organizing, naming, describing, uploading more….so on and so forth. And now, it’s all up there. Well, not all, my library actually has over 4500 hundred photos, and I think I put like 200 on my flickr…but, it’s all I want there for now. Go check it out! I’ve also listed the link to my page on the link section to the right. {Paloma.Lisa} Photography.

Thanks to my sweet little brother, I’ve got a Pro account for 2 years. He paid for the 2 year upgrade and sent me a sweet, “you’re talented, you’ll do well” note. What happened to the little blonde kid who used to steal my toys? I guess he’s growing up into a young man, with a good heart. That doesn’t shock me, it just happened so fast!

It’s been really wonderful to hear feedback from friends and family. It’s so easy to doubt yourself, especially for us sensitive artist types, so some encouragement is always welcomed.

I hope this is only the beginning of exciting new adventures with a viewfinder to my eye. We shall see.

Also, who’s excited about Coldplay’s new album coming out tomorrow!? VIVA LA VIDA!

What have you done lately, or not-so-lately, that you were hesitant about, but you’re glad you did it? I love hearing people’s stories so spill it!

Baby step #2

June 13, 2008 · Leave a Comment

The past few days have been nice days. Sometimes in such a crazy world, it’s rare to have a good week. But this week was a nice one.

I’m excited for new music! Jon Foreman’s final seasonal EP “Summer” is out, and I love it! I’m a little sad that the process has come to an end though, it was great for my never satisfiable music appetite! And Coldplay’s “Viva la Vida” comes out on tuesday! Which is beyond exciting. They’re doing a US tour…but I doubt I’ll be able to make it to a show.

I also finally set up a Flickr account for myself! Feel free to cruise on over and take a looksie: www.flickr.com/photos/palomalisa

And I should be all signed up for the workshop once they get my check. I feel so productive and wonderful. It’s amazing how taking steps towards what you want to do, no matter how small the steps, makes you feel so much better about it all!

I’d encourage all of you to do the same. If there’s something you want…try and go for it. Pray about it and then take the baby steps through the doors that open up. It’s a little scary, but that’s where trust comes in. And God’s plans for our lives are FAR beyond what we can even imagine. So why not trust in someone who is ALWAYS looking out for our best interest!?

Happy friday. I hope you all have a wonderful weekend. Do something that makes you a little nervous. It’ll be good for you.
